1998年 2月 27日、Apple Computer が Newton 関連のビジネスの中止を発表した。
それから5年、いまだに根強いファンによって改良され続けている。
Five Years Later, Newton Still Going Strong
CrezzyMan writes “Today is the five year anniversary of Apple’s cancellation of the Newton platform. In spite of this, the Newton community has remained stronger than ever: it has even been the subject of academic research. In just the last few days, an IrCOMM stack and a new connection library have been released, on top of OS X syncing and 802.11b support.”

個人的には今でも Newton デバイスは設計思想とその実装の点で最高のPDAだと思っている。残念ながらアメリカに来てから生活スタイルの変化から使う機会が激減し、いつのまにか電池もへたってしまった。家で思い出したようにACアダプタに継いで電源を入れることがあるぐらいだがまだ捨てない。いまは休止中なだけなのだ。
上の記事に書いてあるライブラリも面白そうだし、機会ができたら絶対また復活させてやるのでそれまで待っていてくれ。> うちの Newton MP 2100 そして Newton lInc.
